Mr. H. R. Grenfell, who also spoke at some length,

and said how often and how ardently be had supported Mr. Gladstone, held that the time had at length come once more when Liberals should unite even with the party opposite to defeat a policy so dangerous as this,—a policy utterly condemned by the Duke of Wellington, who knew Ireland, said Mr. Grenfell, better than any one else. "Nothing could stem the tide of rebellion, dis- order, rapine, and bloodshed, but the determination of the English people to show a bold front in the matter."
