Sir: I am wondering whether Simon Cour- tauld really knows Spain or whether he has wanted to present us with a well written article to make a political point. If he has travelled the length and breadth of Spain he will have noticed a fact — which does not emerge from his article — namely that the nearer you get to Gibraltar the less the Spaniard is interested, the less he wants any change. In Malaga in particular the man in the street will ask, 'Who on earth would want that place?' The woman will say, 'I love shopping there, the coffee is certainly cheaper.' I expect Mr Courtauld is too young to remember India invading and taking over Goa vi et armis in 1961 with no legal or other excuse — except proximity. (The gunnery officer in the Indian navy used to give me an exultant blow by blow account of the shelling of the populace.) In the end did this aggression do any good to either country? Why not leave well alone — and perhaps spare a thought for self-determination, of which at one time we used to hear so much?
