Osagyefo

SIR,-Brian Crdzier, somewhat out of his depth in reviewing Nkrumah's Neo-Colonialism, begins by stating that `Dr. Nkrumah is known in Ghana as the Redeemer.' The word osagyefo is an Akan title traditionally given to leaders who have been victorious in battle. This title was spontaneously be- stowed on the President of Ghana by the people. To many of them it has more meaning than the foreign title of president. 'Redeemer' is the mis- translation employed by one of our most reaction- ary newspapers which has always been anti-Ghana. The word is used as a slur. Cf. 'Messiah.'
