Sir: Martyn Harris is to be congratulated on his article, 'We are all disabled now' (3 December). His résumé of current popular attitudes was brilliant and I recognise, to my chagrin, my own past feelings.

However, five years of pushing, pulling, heaving and tipping my one-and-a-half times my size, stroke victim, wheelchair-bound hus- band along high streets and in and out of shops, offices and theatres has radically changed my feelings on the subject.

How thankful I am that councils and man- agements are recognising both the plight and the commercial advantage of catering to this rapidly growing section of our community, and are providing ramps and crossing places and easier access all round.

We can all do without The Spectator cash- ing in with a clever joky article seeming to trivialise our misfortunes.
