Among the nine decidedly American articles in this number of

the Atlantic Monthly are Recollections of Stanton under Lincoln," "Hamilton Fish," and "Tammany Hall." The last deserves to be read by all who are in the habit of associating Tammany with everything that is imfamous in Municipal Government. The author, while he asks,—" Did we rebel against England, have we declared constitutions, made laws, organised a nation, in order that Mr. Richard Croker, or his successor in the office of Tammany Boss, might put his foot on our necks and keep it there P" allows that the present Boss "gives the city a fairly good though tyrannical government."
