THE result of the recent election has forced Mr. Hughes to resign the Premiership of the Australian Commonwealth, as I anticipated in these notes, and his colleague, Mr. Bruce, is now engaged upon the task of Cabinet-making. To the very last Mr. Hughes believed he would obtain a majority in the House of Representa- tives, and his resignation was not announced at the Nationalist caucus until February 2nd. He has survived his fellow-countryman, Mr. Lloyd George, in office by less than three months. The only outstanding figure at the Peace Conference now in office is General Smuts.
