[To the Editor of the SPECTATOR.] Sin,—It is impossible to

express the pain and sorrow I felt when reading on page 186 of last Saturday's Spectator your advocacy of the use of contraceptives. That a paper of such high standing should unashamedly adopt an ethical standard which flatly contradicts the teaching of Christ and His Church is to me altogether inexplicable.

If existing economic conditions make the rearing of large families in decency very difficult, the true remedy lies in reforming the conditions, not in abrogating a Divine law. Your remedy is worse than the disease. Abstention from and in marriage is lawful and has Biblical sanction, but the cult of hedonism (which is what your plan really inculcates) is as the sin of idolatry.—I am, Sir, &c., A. T. FRYER.
