last Sunday of the Princess Royal, the King's eldest sister. The sincere sympathy of the whole nation with the Royal Family in their sorrow has been unmistakable. Few marriages have been more popular than that of the Princess Royal with Lord Fife, who was afterwards created Duke of Fife. It was obviously a marriage of affection, not of arrangement—a marriage after the hearts of the people and one which has helped to establish the propriety of Royal persons marrying outside their circle. The Princess Royal was little known to the public, as she preferred a life of seclusion, but at home she had very serious duties to perform and artistic tastes to cultivate, and these things she did so as to earn the respect and liking of all who knew her.
