The correspondent of the Morning Chronicle, writing from Constan- tinople

on the 21st June, says that through the energetic remonstrances of Lord Ponsonby, Baron Sturmer, and " their colleagues," the Porte is about to adopt effective measures to relieve the Christians of Syria from oppression : the Christians of the mountains under the govern- ment of Emir Beshir and the Maronite Christians, instead of commu- nicating with the Sultan through the Pasha of Damascus, will appoint agents of their own to represent them in Constantinople; an officer is to be specially apointed to govern and protect the Christians of Jerusa- lem and that tract of country ; and Negib, Pasha of Damascus, a noto- rious oppressor, is to be recalled.
