A haven for Mr Jones

From Mr John Hinde Sir: An inexpensive location close to sea, beach and mountains, where the climate is near ideal and the natives friendly and hon- est, is not quite as elusive as Mr Bernard Jones fears (Letters, 20 May). It has to be New Zealand, probably at the top end of the South Island. In addition to all the qualities he seeks, the natives speak English, drive on the left and make superb wines. The journey might stretch the available funds, but with a bit of luck it only has to be made once.
