Sir Harry Lauder

Sta,—Apropos the paragraph by Janus on Sir Harry Lauder being frugal rather than mean, I would mention that when Harry from time to time visited Sheffield on tour he made a point of going to a poor district called Portobello and distributing largesse there. In the same way he was mindful of a girl who was an invalid in a poor home in Manchester, regularly going to see her and help her whenever he was in that city. No doubt many others have cause to remember Harry with gratitude for kindnesses received and he seems to have some claim to the words of Wordsworth: "That best portion of a good man's life, his little, name- less, unremembered acts of kindness and of love."—Yours faithfully,

AN ADMIRER.
