Saving Solo

Sir: Clive Gammon was so right about "the harsher alternative" being the right one in The Wild Dogs of Africa documentary. One of the most memorable experiences for television viewers was seeing a Biafran actually die before their very eyes. It would have cheapened a magnificent bit of reportmg had the cameraman instead fed the poor starving wretch and saved his life.

How often can we count on seeing a living creature die on television? And there it was, this puppy with a camera trained on him! This was a rare opportunity for honest reportage, and, regrettably, it was lost.
