Correction

Duns Scotus could not have been `brooding in the palace of Charles the Bald at Compiegne', as stated in my review of Georges Duby's The Knight, The Lady and The Priest (25 February), since he was not born un- til four centuries later. The broody, scholar was, of course, the other John Scotus, otherwise known as Erigena. I am sorry for this ancient howler, which I need hardly say was
