MONEY MARKET.

STOCK EXCHANGE, FRIDAY Arraromox.

The English Stock Market has evinced more vitality during the last few days than for some time before, and prices have advanced from 1 to 1 per cent since last week ; the closing price of Consols this afternoon being 971.1. There is A slight increase in demand for money, and discount in Lombard Street is Tether tighter than usual. The rate of exchange upon Paris also conti- nues to droop. There has consequently been the usual anticipation of an in- crease of the rate of Bank discount, which has not been realized. Exche- quer Bills have declined, the premium having fallen to 49s. It can hardly be expected that these securities can be kept at a very high premium while the general value of money continues at from 21 to 3 per cent. In the Foreign Market, the arrival of hi. Payno from Mexico with the original order upon the Government of the United States for the payment to the agent of the Bondholders of 2,500,000 out of the Californian indemnity, and due in May 1852, has given firmness to Mexican Bonds, which have advanced from 1 to 1 per cent. By the same steamer a small remittance on account of the dividends has been received. Peruvian Bonds are heavy, in the almost total absence of business. It seems premature to pronounce upon the quality of the Australian guano, as only one cargo has yet arrived, which is said to be deficient in ammonia ; though the Perth Gazette (Western Australia) states that masses of crystallized ammonia had been picked up upon the guano-beds. The quantity producible from Egg Island, the pre- sent Australian bed, is stated at about 6000 tons ; but as it appears that Lieutenant Helpman, of the Colonial schooner Champion, had discovered an- other large accumulation of this valuable commodity, the quantity may be very much greater. It is clear that if our Colonial produce can compete with the Peruvian in either quality or quantity, the prospect of the continued pay-

ment of the dividends upon Peruvian Stock must be diminished, as the only fund to provide for such payment arises from the Government monopoly of guano. Portuguese Bonds are firmer ; the success of the rebellion, and consequent elevation of Saldanha to the office of Prime Minister, having induced some purchases, which, from the limited amount of Stock at market, have caused an improvement of about 2 per cent. From the same cause, Spanish Stock has become firmer within the last day or two. Russian and the other Northern European Stocks have been steady within a trifle of our last quotations ; the demand for the former in Paris still continuing.

The Railway Share Market has not been quite firm. The tolls for the week ending last Saturday were not so extensive as was anticipated. Ex- pectation has therefore been generally disappointed. It remains to be seen whether the traffic of succeeding weeks will increase to the extent necessary to pay dividends upon the present high prices. The prevailing opinion among the best-informed persons connected with railways appears to be against the increase of traffic to the required amount. All the principal Shares are from 1/. to 21. lower than last week, and there is a proportional decline in the minor varieties. The French Shares were better at the com- mencement of the week, when a slight impulse was given to them by the peaceful solution of the anticipated difficulties of the 4th instant in Paris. The upward movement then commenced has not been supported, and the market has since been in a quiet state; closing this afternoon atrather lower prices than on Monday.
