Abortion ethics

Sir: In his article on 'Abortion ethics' (26 April), John Rowan Wilson points out that the BMA Council and the ma Representative Body often come to quite different conclusions.

The council, after initially stating that it objected to social factors being taken into account when assessing the necessity for abor- tion, wrote to The Times on 29 April pointing - out that where social circumstances were very adverse 'termination in these circumstances would be ethical.' It may be that the BMA Council has decided to moderate its views after recollecting that last year at the BMA ,annual conference in Bristol, opponents of abortion law reform had their delaying resolution calling for a Royal Commission to be set up defeated by 274 votes to 98.
