Shop floor directors

Sir : In his article on 'Shop floor directors' in the iron and steel industry (26 April), Lord Melchett expresses the hope that the employee directors will bring to the group board the point of view of the great mass of people working in the industry.

Although the employee directors serve in a personal capacity and not as elected represen- tatives, it was understood by people employed in the industry, as I am employed, that they were chosen from names submitted by trade unions within the industry.

In one instance, however, an appointment has been made Of a person who was not nominated by his union, the Iron and Steel Trades Confederation.

The appointment in question has aroused widespread criticism from people employed in the industry, and the laudable objects of Lord Mekhett and the Corporation are not therefore likely to be achieved if people are appointed who do not carry the confidence of people on the shop floor.
