LETTERS Tumanov defects

Sir: Mr Lev Loseff (Letters, 12 April) does not mention the finding of Radio Liberty's Broadcast Analysis Division, that his broadcast was 'anti-semitic and the most Offensive programme aired by the Russian service in ten years'. Nor does he remark on the sacking of the Jewish democrat Vadim Belotserkovsky from the station. Does he have any comment on the defec- tion of Oleg Tumanov? Tumanov, who Personally organised the offensive broad- casts in question, disappeared from Munich in the week my article ('Liberty for Jew baiters', 1 March) was published. Last week, he appeared at the traditional Mos- cow press conference and denounced Radio Liberty as an agent of the CIA and as a nest of fascists. If, indeed, a KGB mole has been responsible for the transmis- sion of ultra-rightist ravings to the Eastern bloc all this time, it would put a new shine on the old saying about 'useful idiots'.
