It is strange that this should have happened as the result of a subterranean movement which both parties in their official capacity disavowed. Although Mr. Smith has -failed he has impressed his personality on two worlds. Many foreigners who have no strong political feeling one way or the other would have been pleased at the thought of that- jovial face and ready wit being housed at Washington. It was enough, however, for Mr. Hoover to keep still and silent and let prosperity speak for itself. Prosperity has become an alternative spelling of Republicanism.
