Falling into its place in -the Official History of the War comes the fourth volume of the Military Operations, France and Belgium, 1915 (Macmillan, 12s. 6d.), which has been compiled by Brigadier-General- Sir James Edmonds and illustrated by Major Becke's maps and sketches. Its special theme is the battles of Aubers Ridge, Festubert and the tragedy of Loos, together with the expansion of the British Expeditionary Force during the period, and its special interest that it introduces to our notice the Territorial and New Army divisions as first employed "as complete formations in a great offensive." - The awful slaughter. and . pitiably small results of the 1915 battles are set forth with cold precision and the added comment : "Such was the price paid in flesh and blood for unpreparedness for war."
