SIR,—Your correspondent Mr. A. R. Clough is mistaken in thinking

that the "green flash" at the instant that the sun sets in a clear sea is not seen in northern latitudes. In the course of seven summers spent in Brittany, near St. Malo, I have seen it many times. It is customary to look out for it there, when the conditions seem favourable, but it is. a rare phenomenon and very striking.—Your obedient servant,
