A Second Hand Life Charles Jackson (W. H. Allen 30s). Nineteen years since The Lost Weekend, Jackson's authoritative portrait of an alcoholic, but this routine study of a nymphomaniac has nothing in common with the earlier book.

Napoleon in Russia Alan Palmer (Deutsch 45s). Skilful use of little-known sources makes this account of 1812 particularly rewarding. Author brings out how the Russians saved themselves more by accident than by strategic skill.

The Japanese Miracle Men Ralph Hewins (Seeker and Warburg 70s). Tough, fast-moving study of the Nipponese tycoons who have been responsible for Japan's extraordinary economic growth in the last fifteen years, making the country the third largest industrial power in the World.
