A curious mail-bag robbery took place recently in York- shire.

The postmaster of South Cave, after leaving the office unguarded for—as he says—only a few moments, on his return, found the mail-bag gone. It was afterwards found, minus a letter containing cheques to the amount of 750/., which ultimately reached its destination with the greater portion of its contents. A niece of the postmaster's wife, who was said to have been seen looking in at the window of the office, and who attempted subsequently by a clumsy device to cash one of the missing cheques, was arrested ; but con- siderable mystery hangs over the affair still. At all events, it may act as a caution to country postmasters, who are not generally distinguished for too careful a discharge of their responsibilities.
