Though the Pope has not invited) Protestants to the Council,

he has invited Bishops of the Greek and Eastern Churches, over whom he evidently hopes,—vainly, we suspect,—to regain his power. But he has nothing to offer except pardon, and much to receive. So onesided a bargain will not recommend itself to Branch Churches, proud at once of their independence and of their peculiar dogmas.
