We wish to recommend to our readers two pamphlets on

the causes of the war which are of high interest and merit. Our Just Cause (W. Heinemann, le. net) is a repertory of " facts about the war for ready reference," aptly described as "ammunition for civilians." It has been prepared under the auspices of the Royal Colonial Institute by a well-known Canadian Professor of History.---Dr. J. Holland Rose brings his trained historical intelligence to bear on the question, Why are We at War ? (W. Heller and Sons, Id.), and adjures us never to make peace "until Belgium is avenged, until France is made secure, and until the public law of Europe is vindicated."—We are glad to note that the Oxford account of Why We are at War (Clarendon Press, 2s. 6d. net) is already in its fourth impression.
