it was officially announced in Wednesday's papers that an attack

bad been made by part of the Japanese Fleet upon Jaluit Island, which forma part of the large archipelago known as the Marshall Islands in Polynesia. The island was believed to be one of the bases of the German warships cruisirg in that part of the world. A landing was made by the Japanese

marines, who, without any opposition being offered to them destroyed the military establishments on the island, seized some ammunition, and liberated a British merchant ship that had been held up there. A Reuter telegram from Tokio adds that the Navy Department there has explained that this action has been taken for purely military purposes, and not with a view to the permanent occupation of the island.
