Naval EcOnomies in the United States • It is said

that the 'United -States Government is con- sidering a reduction of its NaVy Estiniates by £12,000,000, involving a decrease of 4,000 in the strength of the personnel and the closing of two naval stations. If the report is well founded, and if it is adopted by Congress next winter, the United. Statei will be doing much to further the cause of disarmament. The American Navy is at `present much stronger in Shipg and men than the British Navy, and costs half as much again to keep up. It would be premature to assume that the proposed reduction will be carried out. Senator Hale, chairman of the Naval Affairs Committee of the Senate, has declared this week that the American Government ought to spend £150,000,000 in the next five years on its Navy. But with a heavy Budget deficit in prospect Senator Hale may perhaps be overruled.
