A terrible calamity has happened to the Fleet. It is

believed that the Captain, the second greatest ship in the British Navy, a ship by herself equal to many fleets, has foundered in a gale in Vigo Bay. The only evidence appears to be that of fragments floated up to Cape Finisterre, and it is consequently considered that all hands must have perished,—" hands " including the sons and nephews of some of the most prominent men in England. The news as yet may require some confirmation, but it seems to be only too true. The designer of the ship, Captain Cowper Coles, the irascible, much-writing man of genius, is said to have perished in her, a greater loss than even that of the ship.
