The Tories in Rutlandshire are preparing to contest the representa- tion of the county with the Barham family. Their candidate is a son of Lord Downe.

From the manufacturing districts the reports are generally unfavour- able; though a slight demand for manufactured articles has appeared in Manchester and Leeds. In Leicestershire trade is deplorably dull.

At the Liverpool Assizes, Mr. Bronterre O'Brien was found guilty of sedition ; and on Wednesday was sentenced to eighteen months' im- prisonment, and ordered to find sureties in 3001. and enter into his own recognizances in 500/. to keep the peace. He prayed that his sentence might be "banishment for life" ; but the Judge told him he knew very well such a punishment was unknown to the law of England. The Reverend Mr. Jackson, another Chartist agitator, was sentenced to the same punishment as O'Brien.

Mr. Temple Frere, who had been keeping his terms at Trinity College, Cambridge—a young man of very high promise—lost his life on Saturday night, by drowning in the River Cain, while endeavouring to save the life of a young companion. An inquest was held on the body on Sunday morning, and a verdict returned of " Accidental drowning."
