Madeira in the hands of a revolutionary military junta last week-end appears to have been a politically-inspired gesture against the Portuguese Dictatorship. The High Commissioner, all Government officials, and several unsympathetic officers have been placed under arrest, and behind a façade of civic normality Funchal is making serious preparations for armed resistance.
