The Silent Traveller in the Yorkshire Dales. By Chiang Yee.

(Methuen. 8s. 6d.)

MR. CHIANG YEE'S observations on his wanderings in the Pennine country will delight all who know Yorkshire. He is an observant and witty traveller, and his comparisons between our scenery and that of China are of great interest. He is also a painter, and his sixteen landscapes, half of them reproduced in colour, are strangely fascinating. Here we see our English countryside through Chinese eyes and depicted with the delicacy that for Westerns seems to characterise all Chinese pictures. His " Kilnsey Crag" ond " Parcevall Hall Under the Moon" might, for all we know, be anywhere in China and yet are recognisab:e. For such charming illustrations, as well as for the text, the book should not be missed.
