This, which I find disquieting enough, is from an Englishman

now in Greece: "Greece is beginning to get all the aspects of a second Spain. Strong and well-organised bands of Communists roam the country, and we are not strong enough to wipe them out. They strike at a position, murder, burn, steal food and take away all able-bodied men to fill their ranks. Then they vanish. I don't know how. Some of the bands are 200 strong, a few have t,500 to 2,000 men. They are well-trained (in special camps in Yugo- slavia) and officered by picked individuals, some Greek Communists, some Bulgarians, Yugoslays, Russians. In short they are organised by a ' Red ' Military Mission. And with the British Military Mission managing this side, the whole thing is getting the aspect of a gigantic boxing-match, with promoters, managers and fighters." More of the like follows, but this will suffice. Retirement in favour
