Sir: Surely Mr Cohn Welch (21 Jul)) is doing the cause of freedom a disservice when he sug- gests that the only argument for freedom is the .non-rational, conservative one?

F. A. Hayek's Constitution of Liberty offers a closely reasoned liberal case for freedom. Then there are the works of other modern liberals such as Milton Friedman, Ludwig von Mises and Ludwig Erhard. The writings of the 'classical

liberals, like Acton, de Tocqueville, Mill and Bentham, are just as illuminating today as when they were first published.

But all that the conservatives seem to has.: are Edmund Burke, Winston Churchill and Cohn Welch.
