Sir Iwas most interested to see 'A Spectator's Notebook' commenting

on the Telegraph's Gallup Poll omissions (August 4). And so I have been to my University library — a private subscriber to Gallup — to see what results were obtained in June to the question " If you were to be told tomorrow that the Common Market had been scrapped, would you be sorry about it, indifferent or pleased?"

No wonder the Telegraph — obsessed with pro-Market views—refused to print the results! Goodness me! Only a quarter (26 per cent) of the electorate would be sorry. Apart from just a few ' don't knows' the rest of us would either be indifferent (24 per cent) or pleased (92 per cent).

I am also interested to note that when entry is presented as a ' fait accompli ' about 45 per cent of the electorate still say ' no '(whilst 35 per cent say ' yes '); but if withdrawal is presented as a ' fait accompli ' only 26 per cent are sorry (whilst 42 per cent are pleased).
