Savagery in Chechnya

From Mr Tahir Nawab Sir: I truly like your articles, but the recent accolades that Bruce Anderson showered on Vladimir Putin (Politics. 4 August) are undeserved and expose this columnist's ignorance of events in Russia and of Putin's murderous war in Chechnya.

I do not suppose Mr Anderson has ever heard of the book by the Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, A Dirty War: a Russian Reporter in Chechnya. She describes how, besides being molested and abused, she was almost killed by the Russian army.

The French journalist Anne Nivat also describes the savagery of the Russians under Putin in Chechnya in Chienne de Guerre (Paris, 2000). Similar stories have been reported by Jonathan Steele of the Guardian. And if that is not convincing enough, maybe Mr Anderson ought to stare at pictures on the Internet of the tortured corpses of Chechnyans murdered by Putin's troops (www.kavkaz.org).
