Fein has received a serious check in Ireland. It is not surprising that attempts are being made from the Irish side to bring about a truce. Indeed, it would be surprising if attempts wore not being made, for the murderers know that the game is up in the sense that nothing but the ruin of their country lies before them if they go on. There is very likely a good deal, therefore, in the rumours. There cannot have been so Much smoke without fire somewhere, though we are unable to say at the moment what kind of flame is burning. We have written elsewhere about what seems to us the proper policy of the Government in these circumstances.
