News of the Week

HE situation in China has become easier since last week. The threatened strike which was to begin at nkow last Saturday, in order to deprive foreigners of services and food, did not after all take place. Chinese erchants objected to their buildings being picketed by e strikers. This was a remarkable instance of the foreseen powers of resistance which arise in any coin- unity when a destructive policy is being applied. After , society always wants to save itself. The Chinese erchants, well knowing that their prosperity depends n maintaining relations with the foreigner, instantly cted against this particular expression of xenophobia. e foreign traders, on their side, accepted the surtax ced upon them by the Cantonese Government. Out such small beginnings of adaptation and compromise ry large and important developments may come.
