Some Books of the Week

Tins month the London Mercury publishes its hundredth number (8s.), and a very good one it is, with contributions by G. K. Chesterton, Sir- Edmund- Gosse and • Walter de la Mare and other no leis distinguished writers. Mr. J. C. Squire is to be congratulated on the standard of good English and sound reviewing (although- we -do not always agree with it) which he has so consistently upheld. We particularly like the Editor's notes : the B.B.C. has no more helpful or discerning critic. There is a short story by Karl Capek and a clever essay on modern fiction by E. F.

Benson--himself a master of the art. * * * • *
