The American Surgeon-General reports to the Minister at War that

the precise number of white soldiers officially known to have been killed on the Northern side during the Civil War is 244,747, besides nearly 30,000 negroes. Moreover, 208,000 soldiers are known to have been wounded and disabled in the war. According to the calculation given in the preceding paragraph, which is based on the French conscription, the able-bodied men in the North between 20 and 40, and fit for war, number just 2,000,000. One-eighth of these, therefore, were killed, and nearly another eighth wounded and disabled.
