The missing bottle

Sir: I greatly enjoyed the course by course, almost glass by glass, account given by Bruce Anderson and Alan Watkins of their recent gastronomic heroics at the Con- naught (`Two fat gentlemen', 14/21 Decem- ber). The seemingly effortless manner in which these gentlemen, with only slight help from David Willetts, clocked up a din- ner bill in excess of 000 is a tribute to their epicurean stamina.

One point has troubled me, however. Alan Watney's, sorry Watkins's, account

makes no mention of the second bottle of claret consumed. As the claret was £55 per bottle, it would hardly qualify as being de minimis.

.Did Bruce Anderson, furtively or other- wise, drink the entire second bottle him- self? Quite possibly. Did the sheer volume imbibed during the course of the evening impair Mr Watkins's memory? Or, in retro- spect, did Mr Watkins feel just a tad sheep- ish about admitting to this excess?

I think we should be told.
