We recently described Constantineseo's automatically infinitely variable gear and it

is interesting to note that then is already another infinitely variable gear so far perfeettd that it has been fitted to a car and has shown good result,.

This gear was invented by Mr. J. S. Shaw, of Liverpool. Although infinitely variable it is not automatically so, for Mr. Shaw considers that it is more desirable to have sonk control over the gear. In his system there are two lever,, one of which is for the reverse and the other which permit, of the car being driven in an infinite number of gears ; tip lowest being lower in ratio than the usual " first " speed an' highest higher than the usual "top." _There are no at places for the lever to be put, but it is simply pushed gently forward or backward according to whether the engine requiro a higher or a lower gear. The second lever is used for putting the car into reverse, after which the first lever is used in exactly the same way as when the car is going in a forward direction. Thus it s possible (though not very, desirable for the inexperienced) to drive just as fast in the reverse as in forward speeds !
