A Chancellor's Statement

I never said it'd be a joke

If every broker should go broke. I did say when they earned their bob That jobbers ought to do a job. But who can tangle out the tissue Of price at sale and price at issue? I don't know what the fuss can be. It's all entirely clear to me.

If he should be exempt, the debtor Will through this tax do rather better, And, if the courts say the reverse, He'll have to pay and will do worse. I really can't exactly say Who has and hasn't got to pay.

I hope this makes the matter plain. If not, I'll state it all again, And, till the argument is ended, Business had better be suspended.
