NEWS OF THE WEEK.

THE French hold their own at Verdun. That is the essential fact to record in summarising the week's news, and it is enough. The strain upon the French, hitherto always happier in attack than defence, has been tremendous, but they have stood that strain like the band of heroes they aro. And, thanks to General Joffre's frugal strategy, they have stood it with an economy of effort which will make the groat battle of Verdun ever memorable to the professional soldier. The French Generalissimo has not brought his general reserve into line. That still remains intact for the great emergency should it arise.
