Sir: I'm all in favour of you giving trainee journalists a chance to shine. But judging by her piece about the ailing [sic] Fulham Labour Party ('Red rose, thou art sick', 11 February), Kate Burnett will not become a regular Spectator contributor until she learns to do more homework on her chosen subject or shows more than Sun-style attention to detail.

For the record, Fulham Council has never been 'hard Left'; trainee journalists should be members of the appropriate union (unless they work for D. C. Thom- son) and I have never possessed, or worn, a brown trouser suit. And, if Miss Burnett had turned up at a party to which she was invited that weekend, she would have found lots of Fulham Labour Party mem- bers far• from disheartened about the long

haul to power. We'll get there with, or without, her help.

However, we are to be blamed if we gave her the impression that to be a 'good' Party member you have to go to as many meetings as possible. That's never been the Fulham style: you do what you can but, above all, you enjoy yourself in the com- pany of like-minded people.

Still the 'girls' in the Women's Section will be delighted to know she appreciated their 'homelier' atmosphere.
