Death threat

Sir: Auberon Waugh (25 February) depicts Salmon Rushdie as 'cowering under the protection of the British police'. Does he mean a) that the threat of death is not real or b) that if any of his own writings were to put his life at risk, he would heroically dispense with police protection?
