to contain 63,000 calculations. We have not counted them, and it is needless to say that we have not tested many of them. Of course the

value of such a book lies in its accuracy, and a few of the more difficult sums taken at a venture inspire confidence in the rest. With this con- fidence we pronounce the book invaluable, and no one who is armed with it need shrink from the arithmetical puzzles put by Mr. Gladstone in the House, or the fearful question which Mr. Matthew Arnold told his friend Arminius to put to Lord Lampington.
