4.,"public meeting was held in the Edinburgh Music-hall on Tuesday, to consider the working of the new Public-house Act. The Lord 'Provost presided; several eminent persons were present, andthe hall was crowded to excess, principally by the working desires., The speakers and the reso- lutions, which"passed -without opposition, testified to the useful operation of the Public-house Act, and deprecated any relaxation of it.

The Provost and Magistrates of Glasgow have distributed 6404, the amount of publicans' fines for two years, among the charitable institutions of the city. . .

Great consternation has been caused at Arbroath by the failure of Messrs. Brown and Sons, tanners and curriets. The amount is said to exceed 90,000f—Montrose standard.
