Another place

Sir: Being the twenty-sixth on turn for reading the Spectator (not parsimonious, just poor) I have only just got round to Peter Paterson's description of Blackpool (7 October). How delightful and blisteringly accurate. It put me in mind of my great uncle Toby's description, many years ago, of another place which he frequented regularly with vast loads of mangel-wurzels. Transcribed into reasonable English it went like this: 'Never bother thy head about going down there lad. It smells like a ford yard with one thing and another. The grub is atrocious, the folks downright cussed and rude and the beer brewed from pig-swill. There's a few fine buildings and an embankment stretching for miles with nothing to see except a few tugs and a lot of muddy smelling water'. J. rRim. ston Thompson Aldbrough, East Yorkshire
