The Daily Mirror

Sir: In case anyone takes seriously Richard West's comments on the Daily Mirror (4 November) may I correct three errors of fact.

(1) The Daily Mirror is not run by an 'assemblage of ancient peers of the realm.' There are no peers on the board of Mirror Group Newspapers. There never have been any peers on the MGN board, or on the board of its predecessor, IPC. There are no peers on the staff of the Daily Mirror. We did have one on our books, Lord Ardwick (John Beavan), but he retired three years ago.

(2) The Daily Mirror has no shares in commercial television. Our parent company, Reed International, sold its interest in ATV just over a year ago.

(3) The Daily Mirror does not pay its journalists £130 allowance for dinner jackets or 'hardship money' for being phoned at home. In fact Mirror journalists are allowed to charge £2 each time they wear a dry-cleaning.
