A time for tiles for all

From Malcolm Knott Sir: Not only are gentlemen in period drama given anachronistic wedding rings; they are also robbed of their hats (Letters, 4 November). Until the late 1930s no gentleman ever left the house without a hat. Had Mr Darcy or Mr Rochester walked abroad bare-headed (as they invariably do in films and on television) they would have been thought eccentric to the point of lunacy.

Malcolm Knott Woodbridge, Suffolk From Clive Christie

Sir: Rod Liddle’s article (‘It’s funny because it’s forbidden’, 4 November) was up to his usual excellent standard. However, as any afternoon-war-film-on-telly-addict will tell him, it was Guy Gibson of The Dam Busters, not Douglas Bader of Reach for the Sky, whose dog was called Nigger. Unless Douglas Bader’s dog was also called Nigger, which would give serious food for thought.
