On Monday night people in parts of England as far

apart as Cumberland and Kent were astonished by a blinding flash of blue light which illuminated the sky and lasted for several seconds. There is little doubt that it was caused by a meteorite, but it is seldom that the light is so intense. The Manchester Guardian says that one of the most remarkable meteorites on record was that of August 18th, 1783. It was seen along a line from Shetland to Rome, and gave more light than a full moon.
